Overview
CTS Group SA is a leading infrastructure design and engineering firm specializing in large-scale data center and critical infrastructure projects across Scandinavia and Europe. We are seeking an experienced and innovative Mechanical Engineer specializing in data center cooling and HVAC systems to join our Lisbon office. This full-time role offers the opportunity to work on hyperscale data center projects worth €100M+ within a diverse, multinational team committed to technical excellence and sustainable infrastructure design.
Responsibilities
- Design and specify advanced HVAC and cooling systems for large-scale data centers, ensuring optimal thermal management and operational efficiency
- Conduct thermal load analysis and computational studies to validate cooling design adequacy and identify optimization opportunities
- Develop mechanical specifications, technical drawings, equipment schedules, and detailed design documentation using CAD and BIM tools
- Select and specify cooling equipment, including CRAC/CRAH units, in-row coolers, rear-door heat exchangers, and chiller systems
- Collaborate with electrical engineers to integrate cooling systems with backup power, emergency systems, and building control infrastructure
- Coordinate with BIM specialists to ensure proper 3D representation of mechanical systems and clash-free integration with other building systems
- Ensure compliance with data center standards (TIA-942, ISO 14644), building codes, and environmental regulations throughout design and construction
- Participate in design reviews and coordination meetings, resolving interface challenges and ensuring seamless system integration
- Monitor contractor performance and provide technical guidance during installation, commissioning, and testing phases
- Produce comprehensive project documentation, including technical reports, specifications, schematics, and performance analyses
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, identifying lessons learned and implementing best practices across future projects
Required
- Relevant Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC Engineering, or related discipline
- Junior Level: Minimum 2 years of mechanical engineering experience
- Intermediate Level: Minimum 5 years of mechanical design experience with 2+ years in data center or mission-critical cooling systems
- Senior Level: Minimum 8 years with 3+ years leading cooling system design for large-scale data center or comparable mission-critical infrastructure
- Expertise in HVAC system design for data centers, including hot aisle containment, in-row cooling, and free cooling optimization
- Strong understanding of thermal management, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) principles, and cooling efficiency optimization
- Knowledge of data center infrastructure standards (TIA-942, ISO 14644) and cooling best practices
- Proficiency in mechanical CAD software (AutoCAD, Revit MEP, or equivalent)
- Fluent English proficiency is mandatory
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
Nice to have
- Experience with advanced cooling technologies (liquid cooling, immersion cooling)
- Knowledge of sustainability and energy efficiency in data center design
- Familiarity with BIM (Building Information Modeling) workflows
- Experience with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling software
- Certification in data center cooling design or ASHRAE standards
- Background in large-scale infrastructure or mission-critical facility projects
